What is an IP66 waterproof rating?

What is an IP66 rating?

The first number after IP rates the level of protection against solids, with 0 offering no protection at all and 6 being dust-tight, preventing particles as small as dust from entering. 

This means that an IP66 cable connector would be completely dustproof and protected against all larger solid particles, making it suitable for use in most dry environments.

The second number rates the moisture ingress protection level, which is crucial for electrical equipment that can corrode or malfunction if water comes into contact with these components.

These ratings vary from 0, again with no protection whatsoever, up to 9 or 9K. In the case of IP66, cable connectors with this rating would be protected against sprays or pressurised jets of water from all directions and angles.

Is an IP66 connector waterproof?
