A choice of special application cable glands
Special Application Cable Glands, manufactured by HUMMEL and supplied by Northern Connectors, are designed for demanding industrial environments.
The product family includes five variants with different capabilities.
From withstanding extreme temperatures to resisting chemicals, this series of high-specification cable glands boasts many attributes.
Let’s take a closer look at the different options available.
Chemical-resistant cable glands – VariaPro FKM
The VariaPro FKM is resistant to acids and chemicals, making it an excellent choice for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and energy sectors.
The housing is made of nickel-plated brass, which prevents tearing in the gland – keeping dust and liquids out – and the seal is FKM (short for fluoroelastomer), a synthetic rubber that’s renowned for its resistance to heat, chemicals, and oils.
The VariaPro FKM series is capable of working under extreme temperatures, ranging from -20°C to 180°C, and it can achieve IP68 ingress protection.
Extreme temperature cable glands – VariaPro Temp
The robust VariaPro Temp series from HUMMEL is typically used in demanding thermal applications, including (but not limited to) the Arctic or forges and furnaces.
With a nickel-plated brass housing, this cable gland is tough to break down and won’t crack or show signs of damage.
Unlike other HUMMEL special application cable glands (except for the hygiene cable glands), the VariaPro Temp boasts VMQ (vinyl methyl) silicone rubber. VMQ has a long service life and can withstand temperatures between -60°C and 200°C.
When tightened to the specified torque, this cable gland can achieve an IP68 rating.
Rail cable glands – VariaPro Rail
Having passed the DIN EN 45545-2 and 45545-3 fire protection standards, HUMMEL’s VariaPro Rail series is perfect for all trains within the European rail network without restrictions.
These small yet mighty components ensure that cables connect securely to casings while an IP68 rating protects against dust and moisture. They offer optimal fire protection which is especially important on-board carriages.
The VariaPro Rail cable glands have EPDM sealing inserts. EPDM (short for ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) is a durable synthetic rubber and can operate efficiently in a range of temperatures, from -40°C to 100°C.
With an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) connection integrated, the HUMMEL rail cable gland is easy to install and its slim structure is ideal for space-saving installations.
Foam-cleaning hygiene cable glands – HSK-INOX-HD
The HUMMEL hygiene cable glands have high-strain relief, a temperature range between -40°C and 120°C, and the sealing inserts are protected from twisting during assembly.
The HSK-INOX-HD series is made of high-quality stainless steel which is durable, robust, corrosion-resistant, and long-lasting.
With no sharp corners or edges, the HSK-INOX-HD is much quicker and easier to clean, making it ideal for foam-cleaning processes in the food and beverage industry.
The VMQ silicone sealing is European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG) certified and conforms to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. This also helps with the German Process Plant and Equipment Association (VDMA) Riboflavin cleaning test – ensuring no product residues remain after cleaning.
Pressure-cleaning hygiene cable glands – HSK-INOX-HD-Pro
Made from stainless steel, the HSK-INOX-HD Pro is resistant to corrosion and common cleaning agents, including high-pressure cleaning processes.
Its silicone sealing conforms to FDA standards and is EHEDG-certified, making it useful for the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
The HUMMEL hygiene cable glands are often used in bio and cleanroom technology too – providing a secure seal for cables – and they can operate in temperatures from -40°C to 120°C.
With the HSK-INOX-HD Pro, you can benefit from easy assembly and installation, plus a tight seal and minimal build-up of dirt, debris, and bacteria.
